Bloomberg Money Flows into Virginia Governor's Race

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s pro-gun-control super PAC is dropping $1.1 million dollars on ads to influence voters in Virginia’s gubernatorial race.

Bloomberg’s Independence USA PAC began running an ad in support of Democrat Terry McAuliffe this week. It flashes images of gunmen in shooting sprees -- including Adam Lanza, who killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, last December.

The ad’s narrator criticizes McAuliffe’s Republican opponent, current Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, saying Cuccinelli opposed the gun show loophole and sides with the NRA. (Watch the ad below.)

The ad will last a week, running on broadcast television commercials in the D.C. market, said PAC spokesman Stu Loeser.

Bloomberg’s Independence USA PAC, which was founded last October, has spent millions of dollars on various gun control initiatives in the past. Recently, it spent $1 million to help elect Newark Mayor Cory Booker to a U.S. Senate seat.

Since its inception, the PAC has supported 21 candidates. Only 7 have lost. Loeser said Bloomberg is expected to buy another Virginia ad next week.
