Bloomberg and the Mexican Soda Tax

Mexico has just passed a soda and junk food tax to help fight obesity. Mayor Bloomberg's foundation has given $10 million over three years to finance anti-obesity advertising campaigns and research at Mexico's National Institute of Public Health. Elisabeth Malkin, New York Times correspondent in Mexico City, explains what's been called "the Bloomberg tax" in Mexico and what it says about his goals abroad.

The habitual diet of a mexican is a little bit of pork meat (sometimes), bean soup, a stack of tortillas garnished with a little chile and a 1 litre bottle of coca cola. Since the quantity of beans and tortillas are smaller everyday, the coca cola helps to fill their stomachs and squash any hunger pangs. That is why they drink so much of it every day.

FYI - US brands made with cane sugar are a delicacy. Soda made with cane sugar have a different taste than HFCS - cane sugar enhances the flavor of soft drinks. So if you have gingerale or orange soda, you can really taste the ginger and the orange. With HFCS the flavor gets meddled with the carbonation.

Whenever I go to the Caribbean, I always look for the soda made by the Caribbean Bottling Company in the Bahamas. They make it with cane sugar. There's a US company called Boylans that also makes soda with cane sugar but its more expensive and you have to find it.
