Baltimore Sinkhole Swallows Cars, Displaces Residents

Trains are running again today on the set of Baltimore tracks where a heavy rainfall caused a dramatic, giant sinkhole to swallow a more than a dozen cars and a streetlight earlier this week.

But it will be more than a month before residents in Charles Village will be allowed back on the block where they watched as their street disappeared.

Officials say they plan to investigate the cause of the collapse, using sonar testing to check the ground’s integrity. They also plan to do a video assessment of the area starting this weekend.

Stabilizing the area is expected to take up to 10 days. Neighborhood residents say they’re frustrated after warning about problems in the area for years — noting that neighborhood train tracks were tilted, roads were constantly cracked and the condition of a key retaining wall was questionable.

The last structural analysis of the area was conducted a year ago, using cameras in underground pipes, and the area was declared structurally sound.
