Back in Iraq

Reports this morning indicate that the U.S. has begun to bomb key ISIS locations, after President Obama last night authorized humanitarian drops to help refugees stranded in Northern Iraq. Mark Landler, White House correspondent for The New York Times, discusses the latest developments, and what it says about the Obama administration's willingness to use American military power.

If Little Barry Obama is bombing terrorists to prevent civilian deaths .....
why didn't he bomb Gaza these last weeks as Hamas launched hundreds of missiles PURPOSELY into Israeli civilian areas?

…let's review:

Why aren't George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld in jail!?!?

It was a rhetorical question. Of course they are the same guys. After they started losing the Syrian war they took all their American supplied firepower and cash into Iraq. America needs to dump Israel and get with the Persians if they want to clear the region out.

This is a rare moment in foreign policy where 1) moral values, 2) strategic interests and 3) military capacity are all aligned.

I'd actually be okay with dropping in elite units of Army Rangers & Marines to hammer these ISIS savages.

Quick. Deliver a "Peace Quilt" to ISIS.

That should fix everything.

Iraq has been Obama's "Mission Accomplished" premature capitulation.

Prevent Genocide

The US intervening to try and prevent a mass kill or genocide of a historically oppressed group, by violent Arabs using the Muslim religion as cover or justification, is very parallel to US actions in the Arab-Jew conflict.

It happened in 1948 and it is called the state of Israel.

…these guys make Saddam look like the tooth fairy.

“IS” is in alliance with Sunni Ex-Baathist officers and tribes of northern Iraq that is why they are extremely effective.

The unrest in Iraq was largely caused by George Bush's adventurism so I think we have to be responsible for much of what is happening there (although I am not happy about our continued involvement). That's not the case in Syria (although one could argue that it is in Palestine/Israel).

One solution: consult Rumsfeld and Cheney about what they would do and then do the opposite.

It's all due to the Muslim Arab conquest of the Middle East and northern Africa in the 7th century, and the occupation of other people's lands. Of course the Europeans did the same, conquering the "New World" and Australia, etc. Thankfully, the "Indians" have been subjugated and their relative numbers reduced to a tiny margin so there is little probability they will shoot rockets and try to reconquer the continent.

OK it’s really simple, if ISIS (IS) is not stopped now they will probably take over Jordan, a threat to Israel.

Mark, No, they're not the same guys. But good try at being disingenuous.

Wait, aren't these militants the same guys the NY Times and other bourgeois media say we are supposed to be rooting for in Syria? The same people saying Obama should bomb the hell out of them in Iraq will be posting in the next article about how we should be sending them surface to air missiles and pallets of cash in Syria. The situation in West Asia is becoming a bit of a farce.

@ Chuzzle - Revealing that you think human suffering is funny.

Demonstrably true that Obama is interested. As for all the hawkish bravado and rhetoric coming from the right wing, what specific "kinetic actions" would you and your ilk take in Iraq, Syria, Israel-Palestine, when the American public and Congress are against virtually all action. Lay it out, sir.

Aug. 08 2014 10:01 AM

LOL, if even THIS spineless, disinterested little weasel, Obama, is moved to action, then you KNOW that the intelligence about what is happening at ground level is really bad.
