Attica Prisoner Beating Resonates With a Violent Past
The Brian Lehrer Show | Mar 5, 2015
In 2011, a prisoner at the upstate prison Attica was brutally beaten by guards. Tom Robbins, investigative journalist in residence at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and former longtime columnist at the Village Voice, discusses his investigation (jointly published by The New York Times and The Marshall Project) into what happened, what it signifies about the violent culture at prisons - especially Attica, the scene of a bloody riot in 1971 - and if the case against the guards might lead to bigger reforms at the prison. Tom is joined by Antonio Yarbough, a former Attica inmate who says prisoners lived in fear of guards. Yarbough was recently exonerated after serving 20 years in prison.
