Lee Briccetti, executive director of Poets House, and poet Mark Doty discuss Poets House’s Bridgewalk, an annual poetry walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Great poets lead a grand procession, stopping along the way to read out poems that illuminate New York’s great poetic heritage and provide a fresh perspective on the city from atop one of its greatest monuments. The walk begins at 6:30 pm in the small park just outside of the Municipal Building at 1 Centre Street. Readings take place in the park and on the Bridge and culminate with a sunset reading of Walt Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” by Mark Doty near Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn.

I am promoting the content of the site that is educational and also contains emotionally accessible easily understood poetry. Please have us on to read and talk of our PUBLIC SERVICE during the week of Sept. 20-25 when the PEOPLE'S CLIMATE MARCH will occur and the UN Summit will be on. OUR PROGRAM IS SEPT. 25th at POETS HOUSE is a TIMELY EVENT, FREE TO THE PUBLIC, and it promotes an emotional as well as an intellectual response to reach the heart with caring, re. the suffering of super storms like Sandy and the extreme weather already effecting human lives. I also have much to offer in the way of HOPE for the future, and addressing the problem. The Week of Sept. 20-25th will be a GREAT and MEANINGFUL TIME TO HAVE US COME IN AND READ and TALK. I can also invite an Afro-Amer. poet from our site to come in with us. Please RSVP. My new book WAGING BEAUTY AS THE POLAR BEAR DREAMS OF ICE will soon be published in winter, 2014. I'm a Latino-Italian and feel neglected by the media DESPITE my myriad accomplishments. Art heals life and awakens the inner life. Poetry, literature, music, visual art, dance.... they're all very important!

in 1971, I created the FIRST BROOKLYN BRIDGE POETRY WALK and it was featured in The NY Times and New York Magazine and on the front of Local Papers. Years later Poets House, which I've always supported took on the idea as a fund raiser. I've a letter from Betty Kray stating that I inspired her. re. poetry walks and celebrating The Great Bridge. I love Poets House as a free library promoting multi-cultural poetry. I've donated funds to Poets House and been a member since its inception. I've given a seminar on Transcendental Poetry there and several readings, donating funds and raising funds for Poets House. I just wish that a tiny bit of recognition for my FIRST BROOKLYN BRIDGE POETRY WALK with David Amram as Pied Piper in 1971, was acknowledged as an inspiration for their Annual Fund Raiser. I wish Poets House well and have donated many books and signed editions there, but I always feel a little hurt that my work in initiating The BB Walk is not acknowledged.

To A Log Floating Past A Pier On The East River ~ May 24, 1985

Ancient log
From which forest were you plundered?
Gone are your days as sapling and lovers lair.
Picnics beneath your boughs have long faded from memory.
Your second career brought forth from the edge of a blade.
Life cut from you.
Still, you continued to serve as pole or pylon.
Human inventiveness is nature's clarity.
Floating down the river
Ancient and rotting.
