Annie Dillard’s Total Eclipse

David Remnick interviewed the great nature writer Annie Dillard in 2016, and she read from an essay describing her experience witnessing a total eclipse. Rather than the “spiritual” experience described by some today, it seemed to Dillard awesome in the scary, biblical sense: “It was as though an enormous, loping god in the sky had reached down and slapped the Earth’s face.”
