The Directors of the Kanye Doc, A Drill Music Explainer, The Big Picture, Two Exciting Off-Broadway Plays, The Keys to Feeling More Satisfaction
Directors Clarence "Coodie" Simmons and Chike Ozah have spent years --- for Simmons, over two decades-- following and filming polarizing rapper Kanye West, beginning with his early days as a producer in Chicago, to his rise to fame, and then to infamy. But through it all, one thing comes through --- Kanye's undeniable talent. Simmons and Ozah join us to discuss the resulting three-part docuseries, "jeen-yuhs: a Kanye Trilogy," available to stream now on Netflix.
Last month, New York City mayor Eric Adams has called for the removal of drill videos from social media, receiving reactions from drill artists and rap culture experts. NME US news editor Erica Campbell explains the origins and the negative stereotypes associated with the style of music.
We continue our series, "The Big Picture," highlighting Oscar nominees who are not actors or directors. Today, we speak with production designer Stefan Dechant, who is nominated for his work on "The Tragedy of Macbeth," creating eerie sets of interiors and exteriors entirely on a soundstage.
Playwright Sanaz Toossi has two shows running off-Broadway this spring, and both are comedies that take place in Karaj, Iran. "English" (running now through March 20), set in the present day, centers on a small class of English-language learners whose teacher is played by Marjan Neshat. Neshat will also appear in "Wish You Were Here" (April 13 through May 22), which follows a group of friends living through the Iran-Iraq War. Toossi and Neshat join us to discuss both shows.
Why does it seem that, no matter how great your job is, how many friends you have, or how much money you earn, you sometimes still don't feel satisfied? Arthur C. Brooks, Harvard professor and contributing writer for The Atlantic, wrote about the value of satisfaction, and how to feel satisfied, in a piece called, "How To Want Less." He joins us to talk about the psychology behind satisfaction, give advice, and take your calls.
