[REBROADCAST FROM May 4, 2021] On the album, Vulture Prince, Brooklyn-based musician Arooj Aftab sets poetry to stirring orchestrations that fuse jazz, Pakistani folk, classical, and other musical genres. Aftab joins us for a Listening Party.
[REBROADCAST FROM April 21, 2021] Uneasy is the latest album from pianist, MacArthur fellow, and Harvard professor in the departments of music and African and African American studies, Vijay Iyer, along with collaborators Tyshawn Sorey on drums and bassist Linda May Han Oh. Iyer wrote the compositions over the last two decades with ideas of justice, equity, and identity in mind, and in response to events, including the death of Eric Garner in 2014. Iyer joins us for a Listening Party.
[REBROADCAST FROM December 10, 2020] Singer-songwriter Raye Zaragoza has been described by Paste Magazine as "one of the most politically relevant artists in her genre." Her new album, Woman In Color, explores identity, womanhood, protest, and more. She joins us for a Listening Party and shares an exclusive performance.
We air highlights from our interview with writer and director Rebecca Hall as part of our November "Get Lit with All Of It" virtual book club event. We spent the month reading Nella Larson's 1929 novel, Passing, which Hall adapted for the big screen. The book tells the story of Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, two childhood friends who meet again in adulthood in 1920s Harlem. Irene learns that in the many years since they last saw each other, Clare has been "passing" for a white woman and married a racist man who doesn't know her true identity. We will also air the audience q and a portion of the event.
We air highlights from our interview with Cornell professor George B. Hutchinson as part of our November "Get Lit with All Of It" virtual book club event. Hutchinson is author of the book, In Search of Nella Larsen: A Biography of the Color Line.
