Album of the Week: "Waiting In Vain" from Gabrielle Stravelli

New Standards | Aug 31, 2014

This week, we are focusing on the album "Waiting in Vain" by jazz vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli. The album is a collection of some standard songs and modern material.

Fresh from her impressive run at New York's Metropolitan Room, this album could not have been released at a better time. According to Stephen Holden of The New York Times, Stravelli's recent performances "...unfurled new layers of her remarkable voice. As she dipped and swooped, twirling notes and phrases with a confidence and playfulness that recalled Ella Fitzgerald in her prime, Ms. Stravelli began interpreting lyrics with a ferocity that her vocal pyrotechnics accentuated."

Mike Shobe of The Jonathan Channel recently had an opportunity to sit down with the vocalist. In this interview, the two chat about her vocal practice and her most recent project "Waiting in Vain".
