Cuomo with Rep. McMahon, Assemblyman Cusick and State Senator Savino
(Azi Paybarah / WNYC)
Diane Savino, New York State Senator (IDC - Staten Island), talks about budget negotiations and her support for legalized medical marijuana.
Brian, I'm surprised you passed up this chance. Sen. Savino said that if she couldn't get enough Republican votes to get her legislation through, she'd ask herself what she could have done to convince them to vote for it. I'd have liked to hear you ask what she *did* do to convince them when she was able to get her bill passed. I know, she found ways not to answer the ways you asked her similar questions, but this sounded like an opening she might not have been able to dodge (not that her avoiding answering didn't speak for itself).
Okay, now I know Diane Savino is lying. Nobody in Albany just changes their mind and supports your legislation without some give-and-take.
Oh Savino, you think people are really stupid and you are right.
Working with another party is different from giving them a "majority"
Another day another Albany scandal: "FBI raids office of Queens Assemblyman William Scarborough" - Daily News.
Sen. Savino gave the no's. of charter schools that Mayor DeBlasio *did* approve for colocation w/public schools, but those no's. in isolation don't tell us much. What proportion are they of the total that requested colocation?
She seems to make a lot of sense -- except that she's keeping the State Senate in Rep. control. Perhaps she's as much a Democrat as Staten Island will put up with.
I wanted to dislike her but turns out i like, therefore I don't like her for making me like her. i feel better now.
So in a State where we have NO open primaries, thus forcing people to vote along party lines line sheep, by design. It's a joke that Savino, Klein, et al, can simply form their own majorities with the opposition, as they see fit. Voting is a waste of time.
Please ask Senator Savino why, as a so-called Democrat, she insists on keeping the State Senate under Republican control, which prevents a dedicated stream of funding for universal pre-K, campaign finance reform, and expanded reproductive rights. Why does she hate children, women and good government so much?

If true, that's yet another reason why the program should be implemented through a tax increase?
The budget proposes getting money for universal pre-K by cancelling funding and so closing schools for severely handicapped children like Blythedale in Westchester. Please call the governor to protest, these children have no other opportunity to be in a school environment.
