Tim Bishop (D) vs. Randy Altschuler (R)

The race for Representative of New York's 1st Congressional District is a contest between incumbent Democrat Tim Bishop, who was Provost at Southampton College, against Republican Randy Altschuler, a businessman who beat out Richard Nixon's grandson, Christopher Nixon Cox, in the primary.

  • Hometown: Southampton, NY
  • Graduated from the Holy Cross College with a BA in History; graduated from Long Island University with an MA in Public Administration
  • Elected in 2002; has been reelected three times
  • Started at Southampton College in 1973 as an admissions counselor and worked his way through the college's administration, ending his career there as Provost in 2002

Positions

  • Supports legislation that will reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil by creating alternative energy jobs

  • Promotes legislation to protect the Long Island Sound, as well as Long Island's shorelines and beaches
  • Opposed the war in Iraq
