Monday, September 27, 2010

Ingrid Betancourt talks about being held hostage by a terrorist guerrilla organization, the FARC, for more than six and a half years in the Colombian jungle. Born in Bogotá, raised in France, she returned to Colombia to become a political leader, and was abducted while she was campaigning as a candidate for president. She tells her story in Even Silence Has an End: My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle.

Ingrid unfortunately did not hear the advice of state officials not to go to the area where she was kidnapped. She ventured into the area thinking she was untouchable and this is the result... I encourage all listeners/readers/reporters to find out why she is not liked in Colombia nowadays. Any ex-hostage in Colombia is very "popular" or "famous" at the time they are released and a few years later. But not Ingrid, on the week of her release, she traveled to France and months after, sought to sue the Colombian govt. on the basis that the govt. was responsible for her being kidnapped. Many brave armed force personnel risked their lives to release her from captivity in a successful hostage rescue and she comes back to sue the Government??? Please inquire further when reporting your stories. I am sure "WNYC" has its good share of smart, un-biased investigative reporters.

According to non biased information she was informed by authorities not to go there, she continued, which finally ended in the horrible abduction she was victim of. But telling the truth is not precisely one of her virtues (she is a politician any way).

The more information is presented to oneself, in particular, about the figure of Ingrid... the more mysterious she appears to be.

I personally can't figure out if she's good or bad
to Colombia (even though most manipulated colombians apparently agree that she's nothing but malign to the country; in so many ways that they can't seem to know how to explain zzZZzzZZzz ).

I did read the promo chapter "La Fuga de la Jaula/Scaping the Cage (?)" of her book, in spanish obviously, and did found out a very pretentious literary language. A Marquez narrative type of thing, for such a "horrible" experience.

I found out that it was originally written in french, and the her previous books were written with the help of 'professionals' (something she doesn't deny). She claims this one was too personal and, she needed what she thought could be an spiritual therapy of a progressive 'let go' of the trauma...

I don't think she's evil like her whole country (it appears) claims she is. I do think that *Andresito* Pastrana totally unprotected and possibly laid the grounds that let to her capture (no matter the claims of her political stubbornness). However, these factors cannot remove the idea in my head, that she is an impenetrable character. No matter what (eaey words) she says/writes.

Let's ask some harder questions instead of these scripted "publisher's notes".

I don't wish anybody the ordeal Betancur suffered, but she has to take responsibility for her actions, words, and decisions. She seems disconnected from reality in Colombia and her duties and responsibilities as a citizen and a political figure.

did not she know she was running for president of COLOMBIA? why does not she accept that the entire country, even regular citizens, new it was a bad idea to go where she went? It pains colombians she is not honest and is trying to profit from her misfortune by demanding the government and taking money from people that really needs it.

She was not taken to San Vicente, she willing went there and her companions support that. It was a failed political stunt.

How is it this woman found herself in the vulnerable position to be captured and held by the FARC?

Leonard,

It is of course her version, but it is not like they did not try to stop her. The are documents signed by her proving she was warned and they insisted she did not continue to San Vicente. You should get a hold of these documents, I think they can be found on other sources (newspapers in Colombia). They tried to stop her but she would not listen.
And you should contrast her version of the story of her captivity with the one by Clara Rojas and by the three US contractors kidnapped who stayed with her.
