Russia is attempting to stake out both literal and diplomatic territory over the division of natural resources in the Arctic region.

Today, the Russian Geographical Society begins hosting the “Arctic Forum,” a special conference on the Arctic where scientists, environmentalists and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will demonstrate how important the Arctic is to Russia's interests. Their national interest should come as no surprise as the Arctic region is believed to hold up to a quarter of the world’s undiscovered reserves of oil and natural gas.

From Moscow we’re speak to Charles Emmerson, Former Associate Director of the World Economic Forum and author of "The Future History of the Arctic."  Together, they discuss Russia's declarations of arctic sovereignty and the future battle for energy.
