Can you ask Pedro Espada AND Gustavo Rivera why they refuse to debate Dan Padernacht in a live debate in a predominantly Latino neighborhood? It is because they both believe that this race is about themselves and not hearing our concerns.

Don't believe the hype. The only endorsement that counts is the people's! Rivera has already demonstrated that he will take any and every endorsement to win, but who do you think a wannabe Albany insider is going to be beholden to? Certainly not the people...

And despite given more time to discuss his views on this show, he basically said nothing other than the ideas that all the other pols throw around in the Bronx. Not one thing he said was is his own idea...

I am a proud Puertorican. Pedro Espada Jr. and his wife Connie, their sons, Pedro Gautier, Alejandro and Romero are a family of crook. They have milk the poor residence of the Sound View area. The NYS Attorney General charged Pedro Espada of stealing 14 million dollars from the Soundview Health Care Clinics. This money, was taxpayer money from the Federal and State governments. New York State as well as the residents of the 33rd senatorial district have no choice but get rid of this rat. The Five Crime organized family, must make room for the six—The Espada Family.

Anti-Espada, anti-incumbent sentiment is so high, it’s visceral. Pedro tops out at around 30% with his hard-core, true believers. The recent NRI poll, with Dan at 8% that he disagrees with (so do I, but for a different reason) Gus at 20% and Pedro at 30% with 41% undecided draws false conclusions. While historically the undecided tend to stay home, I believe the Espada haters will turn out in sufficient numbers for this primary, in spite of Espada’s good get-out-the-vote operation. Remember, he won last time with only 4,988 votes, running versus an indicted crook! Many people didn't vote for either one. I see a larger turnout this time.
Also, Rivera’s strength is underestimated by the NRI poll (yeah, I realize they’re backing Gus). He may even have enough to win in spite of Padernacht (no money, no mail, video, or website? Facebook? C’mon!). All we hear is Gus, Gus, Gus! Endorsement after endorsement. Even Ollie and his Riverdale crew are pushing for Gus. It’s still uphill but Gus is coming on strong, with mucho momentum. His experience in campaign organizing is a big plus, along with support of Democratic progressives, Labor, 1199 SEIU, WFP, New Roosevelt Initiative will help get out the vote. 8pieces of campaign literature in last 2 weeks, with more to come, no doubt, that will raise his profile, along with all endorsements. Espada will have difficulty trying to play the race card (Aw, they’re picking on me cuz I’m a powerful Hispanic leader). More like His Panic. Nevertheless, Dems can’t afford to lose this one.

Poem for Padernacht- by John Paul

Alas and alack, where is Dan Padernacht?
He wants to unseat Espada,
But so far, he’s done nada!
His failings – No mailings!

His campaign we sense,
Is just a pretense.
Only way to save face
Is withdraw from the race.

Our only hope,
Dan helps get out the vote.
Either help to defeat Espada,
Or become persona non grata!

Sep. 03 2010 10:16 PM

I don't hear any candidate discussing what they plan on doing to people taking advantage of the welfare system.

Racist! from Bx

Dan have been leading a racist campaign. All of his lit speaks about him being "OUR" candidate in this race. He is only visible in the white neighborhoods of the 33rd. All of this talk about Gustavo being an outsider is simply because he wasn't born in the Bronx. Is it his fault he was born in Puerto Rico? He's lived in the same apartment in Kingsbridge for the past 10 years.

Every candidate I've heard from.. always says they'll clean up Albany. But nobody says how they'll do that.

What's with the "outsider" garbage from both these guys?
Gustavo all the way!

Padernacht is not a candidate. He is a plant by Espada and the landlords of the Bronx.

Now listen to him talk about his family....ready?

Told you.

as ridiculous as the idea of pedro espada having the nerve to actually run for office again and act like he's had any meaningful legislative success for the people of the 33rd district, never forget the stupidity of our electorate and the american people in general. all the experts can talk all day but they always fail to acknowledge this fact and it is a fact. the majority of the american people are stupid, sorry to say this , but it is true. so don't be surprised if this moron is elected again.
and 1 more thing- can we as a society stop using the phrase "people of color"? every person on this planet is a person "of color"...this is the crux of the problem with race relations; constantly separating everyone into categories.

Yes, that's right Mr.Espade, when you can't answer the question honestly because it would implicate you, attack the ones asking the question (in this case WNYC). What book did you get that from: How To Be A Scumbag Politician in 10 Easy Steps?

Sep. 03 2010 11:31 AM

Right, "dirty" politics! You want a day in court! If these "allegations" were false you would be suing and having your day in court to clear your crooked name! But the accusations are not false and therefore you won't put a foot in court to clear your name.

Oh, right! The press has ganged up against Espada. What a joke! The "substance of your work," Mr. Espada, is self-serving irresponsibility. You are a pernicious presence in Albany, and your "service" is shameful. The people are fed up with corrupt politicians, and you are heading for the dustbin of history, where you belong.

To ask whether Espada is a "questionable character" is like asking whether garbage stinks.

Espada is an embarrassment. He is only about self aggrandizement and not the people he represents or the state of NY.
It’s a shame, but he will get reelected. We are lazy as electorate. We will not take the time to look at this guy beyond his incumbency. What he did by freezing the State Legislature should be punished in of itself. He has not earned the privilege to be reelected. I love his last argument in response to a lack of endorsement.."Hey I am Latino like You" outsiders should not
tell you who to pick as your leaders".

Sep. 03 2010 11:29 AM

Mr. Espada "Rent Freeze" issue was a fake. Rent freeze is decided by the Rent Guidelines Board not in the State Legislature. Mr. Espada would not sign on tp vote for Vacancy Decontrol so important to save badly needed affordable housing in MYC.

He has the NERVE to say he's representing the underprivileged and people of color while laying in bed with the rethuglicans????? This man is a hypocrite of the highest order and a crook.

I can't wait to see this windbag defeated and relegated to obscurity where he belongs

i'd like to know why these politicians think it's okay to drive around in vans and buses BLARING their campaign music and slogans around my neighborhood. the car stereo noise and street noise in general is staggering in my area and these politicians think it's okay to participate in this noise pollution. brian, please ask the candidates of the 33rd and 34th districts why they do it and think it's okay. thanks, LC

Espada epitomizes the disfunction of Albany politics. How any Democrat could vote for such a turncoat to his party is beyond me.

As a resident of the 33rd, I've been following this race very closely. I'm so proud to finally be able to vote for someone with integrity and experience. This district has long been misrepresented and pillaged. Espada has to go and Mr. Rivera is the only candidate to do it. I'm proud to be a supporter and will be voting for him on September 14 (along with my family and much of my neighbors).

Espada is beneath contempt and an embarrassment to citizens of integrity everywhere. He should be thrown out, and New Yorkers should insure that his public career is dead and buried. The Albany legislature is a cesspool that needs cleaning up NOW. Getting rid of Espada, who has thrived in and perpetuated that cesspool, is a start.

I wish Mr. Rivera well, but, boy, he needs to hone his extemporaneous speaking style to stay on point. Stop rambling!

Sep. 03 2010 11:13 AM

Good luck to Mr. Rivera. PE, Jr. is an insult to politics everywhere.

I mean, he makes Chicago look light.

Can you ask Pedro Espada, Jr. why he refuses to debate Gustavo Rivera? I find his refusal to be disrespectful of the registered Democrats in the district and a sure sign that he has much to hide.

I fear the corrupt pus bag will win his seat back, he's got his constituents well paid off. Let's hope he gets squeezed out!
Good luck to Mr Rivera.
