I advocate strongly for local, organic and raise some of my food, but I appreciate McWilliams' work immensely. Brooklyn born-in the 40's cabbages and root crops all winter-who would want that?, I now micro-farm. It is a 24 hr/day job, and I hardy produce enough for me! The food web is so complicated and most advocates oversimplify. There is a disconnect from the reality of our food that needs to addressed by education. Most people in the US would starve if we depended totally on local. Thank you, James for the reality check!

Why would grass for feeding cattle have to be grown on cleared rainforest land & shipped all the way here from another continent? Doesn't grass grow naturally in the same areas where cattle are raised? If there's enough demand for grass-fed cattle (& milk), couldn't the grass be grown where the corn is grown now? Of course, this would work better if the demand for *all* meat were reduced.

James mentions that by 2050, we'll have to grow twice the calories on the same amount or less of land. Isn't it true that most of us, especially Americans, eat more than twice the number of calories for subsistence or just healthy living, anyway?
