of course rail equipment is costly. that's obvious. BUT the unions and their retirement packages have a stranglehold on the funding. and of course, the current management for the organizations(lirr,mta,amtrak) are empty suits continuing the same corrupt system for the same old political reasons......many members of my family work as track workers and they will confirm everything i've said. basically they work about 3 hrs a day and the rest is cushioned and saved for another day to keep feeding frenzy going.
do i think there should be track workers, conductors making $8.00 an hr with no pension? no, of course not, but there has to be sanity and transparency.

and what of the admin costs? that's where the real waste is, not customer service.

Do you know how much one locomotive costs? Do you know how much one rail car costs? Do you know how much one piece of rail maintenance rail car cost? Do you know how much one mile of track costs to replace? Do you know how much one switch costs to replace? Unions are way down on the food chain when it comes to the cost of equipment replacement and it’s a cost that can not be avoided.

a conductor just retired with a $239,000 salary, put it that way. these guys rake it in on overtime, like every other bloated municipal fed union worker does. i'm not anti-union in any way, but this is how unionization of our civic progress is bad for all, except for the overpaid workers.
ever been on the gowanus expwy? that "project" has been going on since i was a child (i'm 41). they keep fixing one side of the road, then close down the other to fix that....on and on and on and on...guaranteed busy work for generations of corrupt unions at the expense of the citizens on nyc.

the rail system in the tri-state region is utterly ridiculous and has been for years. these unions that control our transit system are choking the progress so sorely needed.
this is NEW YORK CITY!! why we have this extremely overpriced antiquated transit system is the ultimate in union holding the citizens ransom and doing a disservice to the area as a whole. bust the unions and we could have a modern transit sytem in 20 years.
do you all have any idea how much a conductor on the LIRR gets paid? you would all be shocked

From what I understand, the century-old equipment worked very well for a century and is scheduled to be replaced in October.

This is the time to invest HEAVILY in our local rail infrastructure!
Do you know how many jobs that would create from that change? Not to mention the ease on the highways and emisions!
FORGET HIGHSPEED RAIL! We should be moving to maglev!

As a daily NJ transit to NYC commuter (an sometime LIRR rider), rail lines are having more problems than normal since the budget cuts throughout the metro region.

I know it's pie-in-the sky, but Bernard Schwartz was on Charlie Rose a couple weeks ago and he floated the idea of a $1 trillion infrastructure-only bill over 10 years. This would be the important and crucial foundation for our move to a new economy which has been taking place over the last 30 years and has ramped up because of the economic meltdown and the global rise of the competitive BRIC economies.

No vision or straight-talk about what the U.S. needs from our leaders who are more into fear-mongering than laying out plans.
