Dropping Out

« previous episode | next episode »

Saturday, February 03, 2001

A year and a half ago, I dropped out of school. The teachers didn't have enough books to give us, there were too many kids in classes, and some teachers gave me a hard time. Sometimes we'd come out fighting, so to avoid that situation, I left school.

I DID get something out of it -- knowledge. In my story, I investigate my own reasons for dropping out, talk to other students who've dropped out, interview the principal at the school I was at, and record myself and my tutor at Make The Road By Walking. I also talk about my plans for the future.

Macho was mentored by Kerry Donahue.

i feel like there are two sides to this problem. For example the school system is a big part of it because they are responsible for making sure that their students have resources that are available to them when they need it . On the other hand it is also the children that determine their futures , yes the school might lack resources , but it is up to you to make the right choices and stay in school.

I can completely relate to Macho, my freshman year in high school I lost my dad. It really affected me academically and I stopped caring for myself. What most high school dropouts lack is confidence and motivation. We need someone to push us and help us believe that we're not only worth it but capable of succeeding. Your story touched me and reminds me of myself a few years back. Sometimes when you feel down and out you just have to get up and brush everything off and think about tomorrow.
