Ethnic Media Call for Immigration Reform

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

Hundreds of ethnic media organizations across the country are organizing to demand action on federal immigration reform. New America Media, an association of ethnic news outlets, has produced an editorial calling on the White House and Congress to enact a "just and humane" reform package.

Marcelo Ballve, contributing editor of New America Media, says ethnic media can be a powerful political force:

"These are newspapers and broadcasters that are used to mobilizing their audiences, telling their audiences when something is happening in government, urging them to get involved."

El Diario, New York's largest Spanish daily paper, ran the editorial on Sunday. Other city news outlets planning to run it this week include Weekly Bangla Patrika, Aramica, News India-Times, Nowy Dziennik.
