Flight 587: Six Months Later
Monday, May 13, 2002
New York, NY —Six months ago, American Airlines Flight 587 took off from Kennedy Airport, bound for the Dominican Republic. Soon after, experiencing wake turbulence, the plane's rudder and vertical stabilizer fell off -- federal investigators are still trying to figure out why -- and Flight 587 crashed into this beachside neighborhood of Belle Harbor, Queens. All 269 people on board perished. Five people on the ground also died. It was the second deadliest airplane crash in United States history.
