Leona Helmsley Dies

Monday, August 20, 2007

Leona Helmsley’s publicist says the 87-year-old real estate billionaire died from heart failure at her summer home in Greenwich today.

Helmsley helped her husband, Harry, run a $5 billion real estate empire that included managing the Empire State Building. She was tried in 1989 on tax evasion in a sensational trial that included testimony from disgruntled employees who said she terrorized employees at her homes and hotels

Despite decades of donating hundreds of millions of dollars to charity -- it was that testimony that sealed her image as the so-called queen of mean.

Leona Helmsley, dead at the age of 87.
