No Charges for Boy Who Started Deadly Fire

Saturday, January 05, 2008

A 6-year-old Brooklyn boy probably won't face charges for apparently starting a high-rise fire that killed a veteran FDNY lieutenant. Fire officials say the boy put some gift packaging on top of a lighted stove Thursday in the Ebbets Field Houses. Investigators say the boy was afraid of getting caught, so he took the flaming package and tried to hide it under a bed in his 14th-floor home. The fire worsened, and the family fled, leaving the front door open. That let smoke spread throughout the 25-story building. Lieutenant John Martinson died of injuries from the blaze. His funeral is planned for Tuesday.
