Does Cultural Diplomacy Matter?

The New York Philharmonic in North Korea

Monday, February 25, 2008

The New York philharmonic has arrived in Pyongyang North Korea, for an historic and controversial concert. WNYC’s John Schaefer has been traveling with the orchestra. We hear from John, and from the principle bass player of the Philharmonic, John Deak. We also speak with Damian Woetzel. Woetzel is a principle dancer with the New York City ballet, and artistic director of the summer Vail International Dance Festival. He spent this past year at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and he’s been looking at the question of cultural diplomacy.

WNYC’s coverage of the New York Philharmonic’s visit to Pyongyang is supported by the Kaplen Foundation.
