Bloomberg Yanks Free Parking for Council Members

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

The reserved parking spaces for four City Council members are about to open up.

After the Daily News reported today that Helen Sears, Al Vann, David Yassky and Helen Foster each enjoy a free parking space in front of their district offices, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has decided to revoke their permits.

BLOOMBERG: We do make exceptions for parking placards for some city employees. I think over the years it has gotten out of hand, it has become a political perk, it is just become an as of right, and those things are wrong.

REPORTER: The mayor says he'll continue to cut the number of reserved parking placards the city gives out by 20 percent. He says teachers in particular have no need for them after their contracts run out.
