Special Election?

Three City Council members push for voter referendum on term limits

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

When the mayor's bill to extend term limits comes up, Council Members David Yassky, Gail Brewer, and Alan Gerson will announce an amendment to bring the decision before voters next year.

Council member Yassky says the amendment will address who should have the power to decide the length of term limits.

YASSKY: We believe that the counsel should confront what is the central issue at stake here. Leave it to the voters or do it legislatively. That is the real issue at stake.

REPORTER: New Yorkers would vote on term limits by the spring if the amendment passes.

But council members Yassky, Brewer and Gerson did not reveal how they would vote on the mayor's proposal if their amendment fails
