NYC Cracks Down Employment Agency Scams
Thursday, November 13, 2008
New York, NY —
The city's department of consumer affairs has shut down three employment agencies and issued fines to others after conducting an 18-month-long investigation into what it calls "predatory practices." Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz says people seeking employment should beware.
MINTZ: If you're going to sign a contract, you should understand what it says. That's so important in this context and this industry that is in fact illegal not to do so.
REPORTER: Mintz says the companies that were fined also illegally demanded fees up front. He says the city has collected only half of $80,000 in restitution, in part because some victims are afraid to come forward.
