Cedar Lake Dance Company Kicks Off Season

Wednesday, January 07, 2009

A Wal-Mart sponsored dance company is flourishing in New York's struggling economy. The Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet is one of the few companies that brings in work by foreign artists, such as Dutch choreographer Didy Veldman. It's Veldman's first time working with American dancers, who she says need a little more positive feedback than their European counterparts.

VELDMAN: So when I work I don't often compliment because I feel they know that they're good, and if I don't say it's not good then that part is good.

REPOTER: The Cedar Lake company begins its winter season tomorrow with two world premier performances.

You can watch a video of their rehearsals and hear a conversation with the artists on WNYC's Art Cult blog.
