Nine Die as Plane, Helicopter Collide

Saturday, August 08, 2009

A small plane and a tour helicopter collided and fell into the Hudson River and onto the New Jersey waterfront at Hoboken just after 12 noon. Crash witness Leo Pellegini, was working with the Hoboken's travelling soccer team as they practiced on the field at the river's edge. He says he happened to look up when he saw the crash...

PELLEGINI: I seen this plane ready to hit this helicopter. The helicopter swerved seemed to me that it was trying to swerve cause it was getting closer to the soccer field, so it was rearin' towards it's right, so what I was thinking was it was trying probably to get away from the plane, and you know it got caught.

Mayor Bloomberg has called the crash "not survivable." He says the crash victims include five Italian tourists and a pilot on the helicopter and three people on the plane including a child.
