New York, NY —
New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says its time to reform the city's food system. She wants to encourage local food industry jobs, and reduce the amount of food that's trucked in from other states.
"Food sales and food services in the five boroughs constitute a $30 billion market. But only two percent of the vegetables coming through the Hunts Point Market are produced in New York state," Quinn says.
Quinn says the city should expand farmers markets. She also wants to encourage more wholesalers and retailers to use local produce, and to make it easier for restaurants and homeowners to compost their scraps.
