Winter Dowra Draws Muslims to Midtown

Monday, January 04, 2010

Converts to Islam and other Muslims gathered in midtown this weekend for the first annual Winter Dowra.

REPORTER: The three-day immersion in Muslim theology and jurisprudence was aimed at those who may have been raised as Catholics or Hindus but who turned to Islam in recent years. One of the instructors, Imam Amin Mohammed, says the ethnic diversity of the students will help present a more moderate face of Islam - an alternative to extremism.

MOHAMMED: You have people here who are accountants, who are lawyers, who are doctors, who are businessmen, tradespeople, all trades of life, so when you see that, you realize that Islam is nothing to fear, nothing to worry about.

REPORTER: The Winter Dowra was organized by the Muslim Education and Converts Center of America, or MECCA.
