Man Arrested After Newark Airport Security Breach

New York, NY —
The man believed to have caused last weekend's six-hour shutdown of a Newark airport terminal has been released from custody. Port Authority officials say Rutgers University doctoral Student Haisong Jiang of Piscataway was arrested Friday night at his home. He faces a charge of defiant trespass and is due in Newark municipal court next week. Surveillance video shows a man taking advantage of a guard's absence to sneak past a security checkpoint at the airport Sunday to walk arm-in-arm with a woman. The guard is on administrative leave and facing possible disciplinary action.
New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg, who's been briefed on the arrest, says authorities found Jiang with "sheer, hard police work" of sifting through records and following leads. But he's angry that Jiang faces a charge he described as a "slap on the wrist" and will only be given a fine of about $500.
