I♥NY Logo Designer Awarded Medal of Honor

Friday, February 26, 2010

President Obama has bestowed the National Medal of Honor on the creator of the iconic "I♥NY" logo. Graphic designer Milton Glaser created it in 1977. He says he hasn't gone out once in the last 30 years without seeing the familiar image somewhere. In fact, the logo has become invisible to him.

"That just happens to be something that became so public and so celebrated that you can't imagine that anyone actually made it, it must have existed forever," he says.

Glaser created the logo pro bono for an advertising agency in 1977. He says he thought the image would be used for a few weeks, and then vanish.
