Hairspray, Movin' Out lead Tony Award Nominations

Monday, May 12, 2003

NEW YORK, NY -- The Tony Award nominations for the 2002-03 Broadway season were announced this morning at Sardi's restaurant by film actress Melanie Griffith and two-time Tony winner John Lithgow.

Leading the nominations was Hairspray, the musical about an overweight high school girl in Baltimore based on the campy 1988 John Waters film. It received 13 Tony Award nominations, including those for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Harvey Fierstein), Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Marissa Jaret Winokur) and Best Musical.

Movin' Out, a collaboration of choreographer Twyla Tharp and singer-songwriter Billy Joel, got 10 nods; Nine, the Musical, a revival inspired by Fellini's 1963 film, "8 1/2," was nominated for eight Tonys; Long Day's Journey Into Night received 7 nominations; and La Boheme, Baz Luhrmann's lavish staging of Puccini's opera, garnered 6 nominations.

Paul Newman, Bernadette Peters and Antonio Banderas were nominated in the performance categories. Peters's nomination, for best performance by leading actress, was one of four for the revival of the musical Gypsy.

The 57th annual Tony Awards will be presented June 8 at Radio City Music Hall and broadcast live on the CBS television network.
