Leonard's Questions: Julie Powell

Friday, December 04, 2009

Julie Powell likes reading David Foster Wallace. Find out what else she told us she liked during her appearance on The Leonard Lopate Show.

What have you read or seen recently (book, play, film etc…) that moved or surprised you?
I have been re-reading a lot of David Foster Wallace lately, and the most surprising  (re)discovery was Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.  When I read it a decade ago, I despised it utterly. But picking it up again, I was deeply moved.  An incredibly disturbing, honest, masochistic book.
What are you listening to right now?
Old 97s, Imogen Heap, Old Crow Medicine Show
What’s the last great book you read?
Heck.  I already hit DFW, but I just finished Infinite Jest-magnificent.  Reading The Orientalist by Tom Reiss, now, and living it so far.
What’s one thing you are a fan of that people might not expect?
Well, everyone knows most of my obsessions-Josh Whedon, good meat, Julia…  My guilty pleasure, which I try to avoid, is skittles.
If you only had one day left, how would you spend it in New York City?
I would walk the Brooklyn bridge, eat pizza at Grimaldi’s, and then take a cab to the LIC Bar and drink myself silly.
