New York GOP Readies for Annual Convention

Monday, May 31, 2010

New York State Republicans assemble in Manhattan this week to choose their nominees for the fall election season.

Many eyes will be on the Republican gubernatorial nomination vote, which takes place on Tuesday. Congressman Rick Lazio is favored to win the GOP nomination, after receiving the majority of the Conservative Party vote at its conference last week.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, who was a Democrat up until a few months ago, is running against Lazio, as is Manhattan businessman Myers Mermel. A fourth candidate is Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino, who has garnered support from the Tea Party. Levy, Mermel and Paladino face an uphill battle; they hope to win 50 percent of the Republican convention's vote to make it onto the ballot.
