Listen to some acoustic music from an area now known largely for its electric Afropop on this New Sounds. We'll hear some works from West African singer and kora players Ballake Sissoko, Toumani Diabate and Mory Kante along with tunes from acoustic guitar legends Baaba Maal, Mansour Seck and Boubacar Traore - mostly from the recent compilation partnership with Amnesty International and Oxfam, "Think Global: West Africa Unwired." Plus, other bluesy sounds from Mali, Wodaabe music from the Sahelian savannah and Manding rhythms, and perhaps music from Senegalese star Youssou N'Dour as well.

Alexandra Soltow from Suffern, NY

Maybe you can help me: I'm looking for a song, name and artist both unknown, from Africa and featuring a very assertively-played acoustic guitar, a strong but non-piercing male vocal, and the word "Yangu", possibly in a call-response format with background vocals, easily recognized and frequently repeated. I heard it on a New Mexico NPR station quite a few years ago. I requested the playlist from the station, but the song wasn't on it; there was a song called Maisha Yangu by Joseph Mkwawa taken from the CD African Acoustic: Guitar Songs from Tanzania, Zambia & Zaire, but neither the song nor the artist was the one I was looking for. Thanks in advance.
