Delta, Northwest merger announcement causes controversy

Delta and Northwest Airlines have announced plans to merge, in a deal that will create the world's largest airline. The new airline will keep Delta's name and worldwide headquarters in Atlanta. Labor unions are up in arms over the deal which may result in job losses for pilots and administrative staff.Takeaway Facts:
  • The airline will have 800 planes, and is expected to take in more than $37 billion a year in revenue.
  • It will likely be months before the deal goes through. Although Delta and Northwest execs have signed off on the merger, both the Justice Department and the Transportation Department have to approve it.
