Episode #2126

Barcelona-Born Bagpipes

« previous episode | next episode »

Saturday, December 04, 2004

World music from Portugal, Spain, and Italy takes center stage on this edition of New Sounds. Barcelona-born Susana Seivane is one of today’s premiere bagpipe virtuosos, having synthesized the most modern interpretive techniques with the "enxebre" style of the old pipers. Young Italian accordionist and composer Filippo Gambetta draws on a variety of European folk traditions in his disc Pria Goaea. The Simone Guiducci Gramelot Ensemble” intermingles gleefully romantic Italian folk-style themes with generous doses of improvisation, modern jazz structures and small-group arrangements.
