New Music from Switzerland

Sunday, November 07, 2004

New Sounds turns its attention to new music from Switzerland on tonight's show, a diverse field of styles and voices. Featured is Franziska Baumann, a composer, vocalist, and flutist who collected sounds of ice (creaks, drips, rumbles, shuffles, etc.) on trips to glaciers, and assembled them together in a sound installation piece. Michele Walther (violin), Matthias Gubler (soprano sax), and Luzian Jenny (accordion) are heard in the vivacious collection of songs, "Orange Heart." We also hear from the violinist/composer Paul Giger, the luscious yet marvelously understated singing of Susanne Abbuehl, and much more.
