Tune in to New Sounds for a program of American music for Japanese and Indian flutes. James Nyoraku Schlefer is a master of the shakuhachi, or Japanese bamboo flute. In addition to serving as the head of the Kyo-Shin-An Shakuhachi Dojo, where students are instructed in the ancient way, Schlefer regularly performs in the style of the wandering monks who made it a world-renowned aid for spiritual enlightenment. Plus, hear a live studio performance of music by bansuri player Steve Gorn, one of the few western musicians to have captured the subtlety and beauty of Indian music.
