Spend an hour listening to some of the music by Musical America’s 2002 Composer of the Year, the late Lou Harrison. Harrison predated “world” music by decades. He first turned his back on the academic music – twelve-tone music, and then turned his back on western tunings altogether, writing most of his works in the natural tuning called “just intonation”, incorporating instruments from Asia, and Indonesia. On this edition of New Sounds, we hear a survey of Harrison’s Asian-inspired works for chamber ensembles, Indonesian gamelans, and Western orchestra. (Note: many of the titles are in Esperanto, an international language in which Harrison was fluent.)
