New Sounds travels to some far corners of the globe for tonight's program, including Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where the ensemble Egschiglen was founded. This group is among the leading practitioners of Tuvan throat singing, a vocal technique found in Asian cultures in which two, and sometimes three, distinct tones are produced simultaneously. No less fascinating is the Finnish-Swedish group Hedningarna ("The Heathens") which play folk rock with flying fiddles, screeching bagpipes, grinding hurdy-gurdy, and newly invented instruments. And Andy Haas and David Corter bring their own sensibilities to the Aboriginal didgeridoo (pictured) and round out this program.
