From the New Sounds Live concert series at the World Financial Center, the Swedish folk-rock band Garmarna performs medieval Swedish songs and versions of the music of Hildegard von Bingen. In their versions of the latter, they studied the 12th-century source material and created new instrumental arrangements to surround both the lyrics and von Bingen's original melody. Unorthodox, perhaps, but somehow it's ideally suited to the band's unique sound, as medieval music and modern modes are melted together. This performance was first aired on January 16, 2001.
