Thursday, January 09, 2003

On this special episode of New Sounds, John Schaefer presents his annual, highly subjective, completely opinionated list of the ten best new-music releases of 2002. If this goes down as a lousy year for the music industry, 2002 also gave us plenty of resourceful, visionary, and substantive recordings. Diversity is the watchword. Highlights include some Mexican-flavored string quartets, adventurous indie rock (hint: it's a band which was dumped by its record label only to go on and produce its career masterpiece), and Osvaldo Golijov's Passion According to Saint Mark, an in-your-face, percussion-filed work which marched across America to huge acclaim. Note: Be sure and tune in for tonight's New Sounds Listener Poll show!
