Program #2032

Pianist Uri Caine has done wonders with the compositions of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler, yet nothing he's done approaches the brilliant barrage of styles captured in his take on Bach's Goldberg Variations, as he traverses such genres as tango, minimalism, klezmer, and jazz. In doing so, he links the improvisatory skills of Baroque musicians with those of jazz players. We hear excerpts from his February 2000 New Sounds Live appearance at Merkin Hall. Also on the show is an excerpt from the annual New Sounds Live/New York Guitar Festival, by the famed Assad Brothers.
