What does being an American mean to Baratunde?
May's weekly guest is Baratunde Thurston - comedian, politics watcher, and web editor for The Onion. He offers his take on the latest news, the media world, and American identity in 2010. This week: The Rise of the Black Republican.
At the deepest sub public levels, the goals of the republican party and black america are not the same.. don't expect this trend to change anytime soon until the inner demons of non minority america have been expunged.
Republicans became separated from Black Americans as a result of the "Southern Strategy".Example: Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is not an attractive spokesperson.
Recruiting organic Black Community leaders with good track records would cure the problem. Most of the black Republicans currently shown in the media appear transparently self-serving and insincere to most of us.
So, all the parents who are not teenagers and can afford to pay attention (attend PTAs etc) will get their kids into Charter Schools, and the vast majority of minorities (who's parents don't have time or tools to parent) will end up with the worst of the worst in public schools.
If you take the good folks away from public schools then you condem the rest to learn from the unlearned.
Charters schools will be good for the smart few, but terrible for the remaining majority.
To be a Republican at this point is to be xenophobic and racist. You'll find both wherever you look.
I like Baratunde, he seems to be the only Black man that "keeps it real", whilst still being able to negotiate himself amongst the racial desert of liberal and progressive whites, inc the all too porcelain technorati (especially the mac fan boys). The most amazing thing is he does NOT have dreds or cornrows! Oh.... more on the mac fan boy comment, is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the diversity difference between the staff of a Mac store and your local Best buy..... Why is that?
how can one be a socialist and a nazi??
