Singer Bea Wain will celebrate her 90th birthday at the end of this month. As WNYC’s Sara Fishko tells us in this edition of the Fishko Files, Wain’s voice took her far...and introduced her to other voices she remembers well...

Listen to Sing Sing Sing, performed by the V-8 Vocal Ensemble, with Bea Wain (and 7 others!) From the Fred Waring Radio Show, CBS Radio 1936.

I'm a big fan of Bea Wain, who sang every song well. She could swing and she could sing a ballad with the best of the big band girl singers. She had a very musical sound. I particularly like her renditions of You Go To My Head and The Masquerade is Over (sung with Larry Clinton's band). She did some nice tunes on her own, e.g., Blue Rain, and she was singing well in her 70s (the last time I heard her).

Check out Bea Wain and the Larry Clinton Orchestra on YouTube doing "Heart and Soul." Pure Forties magic. A great song and a great video.

I first heard Bea Wain sing in 1939 when I was 10 yrs old. She sounded so great even on the old Philco radio and I have been a fan ever since.

Bea is my favorite female singer of her era with a slight lead over bubbly Doris Day. She was a great asset to the very popular Larry Clinton and my favorite Bea Wain songs are a product of that musical partnership. Favorite songs..."Old Folks", "Summer Souvenirs" and "Oh, You Crazy Moon".
