Guards and Artists

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Many of the guards the Metropolitan Museum of Art create art when they aren’t standing in museum galleries guarding the great works. Now they’ve created an art journal titled Sw!pe Magazine and have a show of their works at 25CPW gallery. Jason Eskenazi, Guggenheim Fellow and former Metropolitan Museum guard, Phil Padwe, Metropolitan Museum guard, and Bess Greenberg, Executive Director of 25CPW Gallery, talk about the exhibition and the new art journal. 25CPW Gallery is located at 25 Central Park West.

Guests:

Jason Eskenazi, Bess Greenberg, and Phil Padwe,

Between Swipe Magazine and the recent Art Handling Olympics, it seems some of the unsung heroes of the museum world are finally getting some recognition. About time!

Jason & Co. keep up the good work.

Does anyone know if it is true that the Met has a hiring freeze? Being a Met guard seems like a great job.

Yep, a friend of mine who used to be a guard at the Met, confirmed about 20 years ago the museum made the conscious choice to hire mostly young artists with art degrees, replacing the older guards figuring they wouldn't have to pay out retirement funds.

I had a friend who went to Moma, and spotted a fire extinguisher against a blank wall, across an expanse of hardwood floor. The colors and shapes were pretty nice. As he moved around, up and down, and fiddled with the camera to get the right shot, a guard came and asked him, "What are you doing?"

He said, "I'm taking a picture of the art."

The guard replied, "That's not the art!"

Of course, that was quite a few decades ago; I'm sure today's guards would understand.

Have they seen the film starring Christopher Walkin and Morgan Freeman "The Maiden Heist" which is all about guards at an art museum?
