Friday, March 19, 2010

NPR’s Iraq correspondent, Deborah Amos discusses the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Sunni Muslims uprooted or exiled by the conflict in Iraq who have spread across the Middle East, unbalancing that sensitive region. Her book Eclipse of the Sunnis: Power, Exile, and the Upheaval in the Middle East explains the impact of that great migration from Amman to Beirut and Damascus, and how this new population of stirs up the historic conflict between Sunni and Shia.

An insightful and informative segment as usual Lenny. However, Ms. Amos "bloodbaths" happened in highy developed and high literate societies too-Hitler's Germany and the war in Yugoslavia in the 90's should come to mind immediately. It would behoove us to stop pretending that what happens in Africa is so "exotic" and beyond Western norms. It's completely ahistorical.

Matt from UWS,
Beautifully said Matt! Unfortunately, this show is allotted so much time for each guest and truely insightful questions like yours are bit frighting to approach.
Leonard; Matt seems as knowledgable and interesting as most of the guests you have on your show. An intelligent person who hasn't necessarily written a book could become a great segment.

Amazing. How many Arab and/or Muslim countries are but there is nowhere for Iraqi refugees to go? Ditto for the Arab refugees of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

Yet when Israel was forced to absorb 800,000+ Jews kicked out of Arab countries it opened its doors. Ditto when 1 million+ Russians fled the former Soviet Union. Ditto when 56,000+ Ethiopians fled persecution. How did such a tiny country absorb all these people? How did their struggling economy not collapse under all this stress?

So how is it that the Arabs and Muslims can't find a way to help their brothers and sisters? "Poor economies"?! Come off it!

Would you please ask Ms. Amos to comment on the recent elections and the role played by AHMED CHALABI in excluding Sunni candidates?

Leonard,

Can you ask if Deborah followed any families or individuals who moved out because they were gay.
