Before President Obama went to Italy, he headed to Russia. We look at what came out of Obama's visit and what the meeting means for both countries with Steven Cohen, contributing editor to the Nation and author of Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives: From Stalinism to the Cold War. Plus, we'll find out the role that Russia is playing the ongoing G8 summit.

America is a rather provincial, and chauvinistic, country that often overestimates its cultural and, particularly, political power. American values are American values, they are not necessarily universal values, although they sometimes overlap.

America sometimes confuses its "mission" as some sort of extension of the French Revolution's Declaration of the Rights of Man.

The subtle and behind the scenes approach is almost always a more useful in a realpolitik way.

Could you ask Mr. Cohen whether he believes it was appropriate for Obama to criticize the sentence and prosecution of Kourdokovsky(sp?)on a trip such as this?

I certainly do not think it speaks to the competency of the people surrounding President Obama in as much as it just means they are not fluent in Russian.
